Jasmine stood in the doorway to her father’s inner sanctum, watching the Sultan for a moment. Unaware he was being observed, the older man sat at his desk. In his hands he held a piece of paper, worn thin from many readings. He sighed, his eyes welling with emotion as his fingers traced the writing. It was one of the last letters Jasmine’s mother had ever written to him.

Watching him, Jasmine felt a familiar tug on her heart. Her mother had been the rock upon which she and her father had relied. Her untimely death had broken their hearts and left them adrift. Neither had been comfortable seeking solace from the other, so they’d each grieved alone. For Jasmine, her grief had turned outward, and she’d channeled her energy into learning about her kingdom. For the Sultan, the grief had turned inward, and he had shut others out, trusting the day-to-day ruling to Jafar.

In Jasmine’s opinion, that had been a terrible mistake.

A mistake she would very much like to remedy.

“Baba,” Jasmine said softly, so as not to startle her father. The Sultan looked up as she entered the room. Raja walked in right behind her, the big cat completely comfortable and at ease in the sanctum. “I’ve been thinking,” she went on. “Maybe this year we could move the Harvest Festival back outside the palace, like it used to be.”

The Sultan sighed, reaching a hand down to rub Raja. The motion was well practiced, and the tiger let out a purr, pressing his body into the Sultan’s leg as if he were a tiny house cat. “It’s a nice thought, Jasmine,” he said. “But the city is too dangerous now.”

Jasmine shook her head. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “You should go into the city,” she argued. “See what Jafar has been doing to it—” She wasn’t allowed to finish.

“My sultan,” the vizier himself said, entering the room and cutting her off. Behind him, Hakim followed, Iago flying in the air above. “I was delayed in the city on an urgent matter.”

Jasmine narrowed her eyes at the man. “What urgent matter?” she asked, her voice heavy with suspicion. A thought, fleeting and rather far-fetched, flashed through her mind. Had Jafar been behind the excessive number of guards who’d ended up chasing her and Aladdin? Had he somehow known it was her? Then she shook her head. She didn’t want to give the vizier that much credit.

“You wouldn’t understand the dangers of the city, Princess, venturing out rarely as you do,” Jafar said, the condescension practically dripping off him. Then a dark look flashed in his eyes. “But, come to think of it, I did hear about a recent trip…”

Jasmine’s heart dropped.

“What?” the Sultan said, his head whipping toward his daughter.

Jafar nodded. “Hakim spotted her out alone in the marketplace,” he said.

“I have told you, you are not to leave this palace!” the Sultan said, all traces of docility vanishing.

Biting back a groan, Jasmine looked back and forth between her father and the vizier.
